FALLBROOK, Calif. - Sheriff's deputies responding to a report of gunfire Tuesday found a dead man in a home near the eastern reaches of Camp Pendleton.
A 911 caller reported hearing someone shouting and what sounded like gunshots from inside the house in the 600 block of Braemar Terrace in Fallbrook about 8 a.m., according to sheriff's officials.
Getting no response at the door, deputies entered the home and found the body, Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said.
The victim suffered at least one gunshot wound, according to authorities. His name has not been officially released, but family and friends identified the victim to 10News as Gerard Estaquio.
Law enforcement is treating the incident as a homicide but are staying tight lipped about any possible suspects.
Those who knew Estaquio are puzzled as to why anyone would want to kill him.
"He loved his wife, he loved his kids, he loved his family. His family was everything to him," said Patricia, a family friend.
Neighbors describe the area as a tight-knit community.
"This is a quiet, little area, gated community. Everybody walks around, works out, so for this to happen here, it's really shocking," said neighbor Gary Sherriff.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, authorities had announced no arrests and released no suspect information in the case.
