A 25-year-old man is in custody Sunday, being held without bail, on multiple counts of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly shooting two people and pistol-whipping a third in Chula Vista, police said.

Police were dispatched at 6:25 a.m. Saturday to the 24-Hour Fitness at Broadway and Palomar in response to a report that people were shot in the area, the Chula Vista Police Department reported.

Two of the victims appeared to have been shot in the lower extremities and the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.  The victims were transported to UC San Diego Regional Trauma Center. It was unclear if the
pistol-whipping victim received medical care.

The suspect knew the three male victims, police said.

During a televised press conference Saturday, Capt. Lon Turner of the Chula Vista Police Department said surveillance video showed the suspect entering a storage facility.

All three victims worked at a tortilla factory, but it was unclear if the suspect was also an employee.

During the course of their investigation, detectives identified the shooter as Imperial Beach resident Andre Christopher Vega, who was taken into custody at his residence.

Vega was booked into the San Diego County Jail for multiple counts of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, the Chula Vista Police Department reported.
