NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - A 36-year-old Hispanic man was shot and killed Tuesday outside a National City restaurant.
The shooting occurred outside the Rincon Del Mar restaurant in the 300 block of Highland Avenue. It was reported shortly after 5:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, which dispatches for the South Bay city.
Witnesses tell 10News people were inside the restaurant celebrating the World Cup and the Mexico-Brazil match. A fight broke out and spilled into the street, which is when the victim was shot.
"They say that they … hit him with the bottle and they broke the bottle on the back of this guy but after that, you know, they started shooting … four shots …. They shot him in the left side," said witness Patricia Aguayo.
Medics took the wounded man to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said. Detectives confirmed the shooting victim died after being transported to the hospital.
"I went inside the restroom, I came out and heard the first bam," explained witness Natalie Castellon.
She said she had just met the shooting victim and the two were dancing just moments before.
"He seemed like a nice guy...I just danced with him and second later, I'm like, oh he got shot, really?!"
Neighbors in the area tell 10News the area is no stranger to crime, but say they cannot make sense of the shooting.
"It's just a (soccer) game, it's not something that needs to be fatal," explained Ronaldo Ochoa. "I'm used to this, but it's still surprising."
Police say the shooter, described as a Hispanic man in his 20s or 30s, was last seen heading northbound on Highland Avenue. Anyone with information should call National City police at 619-336-4411,
