Pursuit ends in crash in Logan Heights: Driver suspected of beating 2 with homemade nunchucks

SAN DIEGO - A police pursuit ended in a crash off Interstate 15 in Logan Heights on Friday evening.

The San Diego Police Department initially responded to a call reporting people fighting near 42nd Street and Hilltop Drive in Mount Hope just before 8 p.m.

Police say the suspect got into an altercation with another man who accused him of sexually assaulting his sister. The argument escalated, the men got into their cars and then crashed into each other.

That is when police say the suspect pulled out a pair of homemade nunchucks and beat up the driver of the other car and a passenger. With the driver unconscious in the street, the suspect then ran over the man and sped away.

Police on scene showed 10News a piece of the broken weapon.

"We don't see nunchucks very often at all," San Diego police Lt. Paul Rorrison told 10News. "These have been described to me from the officers on the scene as something that looks like some chair legs that have been fastened together with some type of rope."

Police located the suspect's vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but the suspect did not yield to officers.

Officers pursued the vehicle southbound on Interstate 15. When the suspect tried to take the Ocean View Boulevard offramp, he lost control, crashed into a truck and smashed into the center divider.

The truck had a father and his two children inside. All three were treated and released at the scene.

The suspect suffered a head injury and was taken to UCSD Medical Center to be treated.
