Police officers responding to break-in find abandoned baby in Point Loma

SAN DIEGO - Police officers responding to a report of a break-in at a Point Loma tattoo shop discovered an abandoned baby girl in an SUV parked outside, 10News learned Wednesday.

The break-in report came in at about 5 a.m. in the 1500 block of Rosecrans.

10News learned that someone called to say a person was breaking into a tattoo and piercing shop. When officers arrived, they found a gray SUV with doors and windows open.

Officers found the baby girl sleeping inside the vehicle.

A search is underway for a man who jumped off the roof and ran away from the store when officers arrived.

The man, identified by police as Hugo Ramirez, is described as a Hispanic male who was wearing a blue Padres jacket and tan shorts. Police say he is the baby's father.

The infant, who appears to be 4 to 5 months old, is fine, authorities told 10News.

Police initially put a pink blanket over her to keep her warm. She was taken to the Polinksy Children's Center at about 6:30 a.m.

Rachel Fenton, the baby's mother, says Ramirez had dropped her off there to get a tattoo. When he returned and she was not there, she says he snapped.

"I still care about him and he means a lot to me. He's done a lot for me and my life, but I just don't understand why … he probably wasn't thinking but why would he leave his kid in a car like that with the windows down …  he put himself first before our kid and now she has to go through all of this stuff."

Fenton says she doesn't know where Ramirez is. She says she hopes to visit her daughter Thursday. Fenton says she will be in court on Friday to fight for custody.
