SAN DIEGO - Police said eight people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs after being stopped at a checkpoint set up overnight in the Mission Bay Park area of San Diego.

The checkpoint in the 4200 block of Mission Bay Drive was in operation from just before 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday morning, said San Diego police Officer Mark McCullough.

McCullough said a total of 1,651 vehicles passed through the checkpoint with 969 vehicles screened and 18 drivers evaluated for sobriety.

Police said they also issued one citation for having an open alcoholic beverage container in a vehicle and another for marijuana possession.
