Police: Metal cable used to dislodge, rob gas station ATM in Kearny Mesa

SAN DIEGO - Thieves using what appeared to be stolen car and some kind of rope or chain yanked an automated teller machine from its foundation at a Kearny Mesa gas station early Tuesday and got away with the cash inside, police said.

The thieves broke into the Valero Gas Station at 5345 Kearny Villa Road sometime before 1:20 a.m., according to San Diego police Officer Dan Lasher.

A passing motorist saw the destruction and called police.

When officers arrived shortly after 1:20 a.m., they discovered the car was left behind and the ATM was empty, he said.

No one was in custody.

Police are reviewing the gas station's surveillance video to help identify the culprits.
