A stubble-faced man in a white T-shirt made a failed attempt to lure a teenage girl into his truck on an East County roadside Friday, authorities reported.

The 16-year-old Helix High student was walking to school in the 7500 block of University Avenue in La Mesa about 8 a.m. when the stranger pulled up next to her in a white pickup, got out and said, "Hey, get in my car," according to police.The teen ran off, after which the man got back into the truck and drove off to the east.Patrol officers searched the area in vain for the suspect and truck, which the girl described as small or medium-sized and "beat-up."The teenager told investigators the man was unshaven and appeared to be white or Hispanic and 30 to 40 years old.Copyright Do you have more information about this story?
