The shooting suspect, Thomas Bethel, armed himself and went to his stepson's house in the 5500 block of Potomac Street shortly after 10:30 a.m. to confront the younger man about vandalism to Bethel's vehicle on Sunday, San Diego police Acting Lt. David Dolan said.

The younger man hit Bethel in the head with a crowbar, Dolan said. Bethel then allegedly opened fire, striking the victim at least once, Dolan said.

Police called to the scene found the 54-year-old victim, whose name was not immediately released, lying in the front yard with what appeared to be at least one gunshot wound, Dolan said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bethel was taken to a hospital to be treated for a head injury, Dolan said. He was released, questioned by detectives and arrested, Dolan said. Bethel was booked into jail on suspicion of murder.
