FALLBROOK, Calif. - An investigation was under way Friday into the shooting of a man, who apparently ran his car off the road and into a fence in Fallbrook after being wounded.

Deputies received reports that a car had run off the road near De Luz and Harris roads about 12:50 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Joe Montion.

Once there, deputies found an empty car that had crashed into a fence, the sergeant said in a statement.

A witness approached deputies at the scene and said she had came across an injured man lying by the wreckage and drove him to Fallbrook Hospital. Deputies went to the hospital and learned the man had multiple gunshot wounds, Montion said.

California Highway Patrol officials told 10News that the suspected shooter carjacked another vehicle and drove to Temecula. There, CHP officials said the suspected shooter abandoned the vehicle and set it on fire near Rancho California and Sycamore Mesa roads.

The man's condition was unclear early Friday

Fallbrook-based sheriff's detectives were working to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
