PACIFIC BEACH, Calif. - Police have disarmed a device found in Pacific Beach after a caller claimed to see what looked like a pipe bomb in some bushes near Garnet and Bayard streets.
The San Diego Police Department said the call came in at about 5:55 a.m.
Police and fire crews at the scene checked it out and requested the metro arson strike team to help determine if the device posed a threat, and that crew detonated it at about 7:28 a.m.
After the detonation officers determined that it was a cylinder filled with sand.
According to officers, Garnet Avenue between Dawes and Bayard streets was shut down during the investigation, but they are in the process of opening the roadway to traffic.
