SAN DIEGO -
San Diego police on Saturday are investigating a shooting involving a California Highway Patrol officer in Logan Heights.
According to police, at about 9:40 a.m., a CHP officer on a motorcycle saw a black Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Interstate 805, near Interstate 8.
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle by activating his lights and sirens but the driver, who was later identified by police as 22-year-old Matthew Thomas Crom, would not pull over. Police said the driver accelerated through traffic in an attempt to lose the officer, occasionally reaching speeds of more than 100 mph.
The driver continued southbound on Interstate 805 to southbound Interstate 15, where he attempted to exit the freeway at the Ocean View Boulevard exit. Police said the Honda became involved a minor traffic collision with another car on the freeway offramp but continued onto Ocean View Boulevard.
Police said the Honda -- which was initially going westbound on Ocean View Boulevard --swerved into the eastbound lanes and abruptly stopped near the intersection of South 33rd Street and Ocean View Boulevard.
As the officer approached the car, he saw the man get out of the vehicle carrying shotgun in his right hand.
The officer then ordered the man to stop several times, but the man ran westbound on Ocean View Boulevard and then southbound on South 33rd Street.
"I saw him running," witness Ronnie Murray told 10News. "Running as if he was holding onto something… you know how you run with your hands moving? He wasn't doing that. He was holding on to something… what, I don't know."
The officer then chased the man to the 500 block of South 33rd Street, where the man stopped and turned toward the officer while still holding the shotgun.
"The officer clearly felt that his life was in danger as was the life of possibly others because the suspect was armed," said San Diego police Capt. Terry McManus. "The officer removed his sidearm … fearing for his life… and fired his gun towards the suspect, striking the suspect at least one time."
The man surrendered and was taken into custody. He was struck in the upper torso area near his shoulder and his injuries appeared to be non life-threatening, police said. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated.
Officers determined that the car the man was driving was reported stolen from the Mira Mesa area earlier in the day.
The officer involved in the shooting was not injured. He has been with the CHP for five years.
San Diego police are continuing to investigate the incident.
Police said westbound traffic on Ocean View Boulevard was temporarily blocked at 35th Street. The southbound Route 15 offramp to Ocean View Boulevard was closed but has since reopened.
