SAN DIEGO - An investigation was under way Monday into the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man in San Diego's Stockton neighborhood.

Police received reports of gunfire in the 3100 block of L Street just before 9 p.m. Sunday, San Diego homicide police Lt. Ernie Herbert said in a statement. Once there, officers found a 19-year-old man suffering from a
gunshot wound lying in the street, he said.

Medics took him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man was apparently walking on a sidewalk on 32nd Street just north of L Street when he was shot, Herbert said. It was not immediately clear how he ended up on L Street.

The motive for the shooting was under investigation. Police withheld the man's name pending family notification.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call homicide detectives at (619) 531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers' anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.
