SAN DIEGO - A 28-year-old man was fatally shot in San Diego's Marie Wideman Park, police said Monday.
Officers dispatched to the park in the 6700 block of Imperial Avenue at 7:05 p.m. Sunday found the man wounded, said Lt. Mike Hastings of the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit.
"The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later," Hastings said.
A preliminary investigation suggests a man walked up to the victim as he sat on a park bench, produced a handgun, opened fire, "then fled on foot," he said. "The circumstances surrounding the provocation are not known at this time and the suspect is not in custody."
The victim's name was withheld pending family notification, and little information on the gunman was available this morning. Hastings described him as a Hispanic male in his 30s wearing all black clothing.
Anyone with information on the shooting was urged to contact the San Diego police Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
