LA JOLLA, Calif. - A 53-year-old La Jolla man was shot in his torso through his bedroom window by an unknown shooter early Wednesday, police said.
The shooting happened at 3:30 a.m. in the 5700 block of Waverly Avenue. According to an initial report from responding officers, the homeowner and his wife were asleep, their two teens were also at home in bed, when they heard gunfire coming from the yard just before 3 a.m.
The man went to investigate and saw a dark figure. That's when an unknown shooter fired multiple shots through the glass door into the bedroom. 10News learned that the man tried throwing picture frames at the shooter, who took off through a back alley.
The resident appeared to have interrupted somebody in the back yard, police said. They added that it is unclear whether the incident was a burglary or if there were other circumstances involved. The man was hit once on his side. He was taken to an area hospital, but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
Police described the neighborhood as a quiet area where crime rates are low and incidents like this are unusual.
"Everybody knows everybody," said Bill Burke, a neighbor. "We keep pretty good tabs on one another." The 53-year-old victim told police he does not have any idea why anyone would target him or his family.
Neighbors told 10News that the Waverly Avenue homeowner is UC San Diego professor Steven Dowdy.
A second shooting incident was reported Wednesday on Cottontail Avenue where two men were injured. The suspect in that shooting was arrested and the victim was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Police are looking into whether the two shootings are connected.
At a briefing early Wednesday, police would not confirm any links between the two incidents but did say all the people involved in both shootings are accounted for. Police also said the victims knew each other.
