Police: Bicyclist goes unconscious during arrest in Stockton

SAN DIEGO - A man who was allegedly taken into custody for a bike traffic violation is in critical condition after going unconscious following his arrest Thursday morning in the Stockton neighborhood.

San Diego police report that the 51-year-old man was arrested at about 9:30 a.m. in the 300 block of 31st Street. According to police, he attempted to flee on his bike, but was caught and arrested after a short struggle.

Officers allegedly found narcotics in the man’s pockets, and he was arrested on charges of possession of narcotics for sale and resisting arrest.

While processing him at headquarters, officers discovered him unconscious in the back of a patrol car. They attempted to perform CPR with no success. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he remained unconscious as of Thursday night, police said.

The man is in critical condition. His name was not released pending family notification.

Police did not confirm the details of the alleged traffic violation. Detectives are investigating the incident.
