SAN DIEGO - A son is trying to unravel the mystery of his military father.
David Peck was just three years old and lived in New York when his father died. But Peck recently discovered his father's Navy photos taken in San Diego.
"Recently, we uncovered at my mom's house, a photo of my father in the Navy taken right here on those steps on June 1, 1945," said Peck.
He moved to San Diego with his widowed mother in 1977. After decades, he found photographs of his father, Raoul. They were taken in San Diego where he trained for the Navy.
"And I remember when I rounded the corner and looked at this spot it was just like, 'Wow,'" said Peck.
"My father, 68 years ago, stood here after finishing his training on his way to Japan."
Peck said he doesn't remember much about his dad, but he's hoping the men in the photographs can provide some clues so his three children, including third grader Mika, can learn more about their grandfather.
"I knew he was, he was a very serious person, he didn't smile much in his pictures," said Mika.
In one shot taken at the beach in La Jolla, Peck's father is the only man wearing a shirt and hat. He was part of a group of brave men who would go off to fight in World War II.
"These guys stood on these steps 68 years ago not knowing what was going to happen to them ," said Peck.
"It's really special, to be able to find these photos, that's why I'm hoping I can actually find some of the men that served with him or even the children who may have stories about it , just bringing me that much closer to my father," he said.
In the meantime, Peck said he's grateful to live in a city that held a chapter in his father's life.
"It's just so odd that there's a place I have in San Diego that I can relate to my father," said Peck.
