Pedestrian struck and killed by Amtrak train, investigators rule it a suicide

SAN DIEGO - A passenger train struck and killed a pedestrian near Lindbergh Field Tuesday.

The southbound Amtrak locomotive hit the 45-year-old man about 10:15 a.m. near the 1900 block of California Street in the Harborview district of San Diego, according to police.

The victim, whose name was not immediately available, died at the scene, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.

Officers blocked off traffic lanes between West Grape and West Hawthorn streets and issued a congestion alert for the heavily traveled area. The advisory was canceled about an hour later.

Investigators said the man committed suicide.
