ESCONDIDO, Calif. - A pedestrian was killed Saturday in a hit-and-run crash in Escondido.
The crash occurred just before 6:30 p.m. on East Washington Avenue, near Waverly Place. Police said a 46-year-old man was crossing Washington Avenue when a car struck him and then drove away. The man died at the scene, police said.
Fortunately for police, witnesses saw the driver who had escaped.
"Witnesses followed the suspect vehicle, maybe about a mile, and our officer arrived onto the scene and we able to make an arrest," said Escondido police Lt. Tom Albergo.
The driver, who was identified by police as 21-year-old Ivan Ruiz Mejia was arrested at his home. Escondido police Sgt. Scott Walters said Mejia will be booked on suspicion of felony drunken driving and hit-and-run.
The victim's name was not released.
Escondido police are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with additional information can call (760) 839-4722 to leave a message for the investigating officers.
