Pedestrian hit, killed on southbound state Route 163 near Washington Street

Person landed on vehicle

SAN DIEGO - An apparently suicidal man leaped to his death Tuesday afternoon from a bridge over state Route 163 in Hillcrest, forcing a several-hour closure of a stretch of the busy freeway, authorities reported.

The pedestrian jumped off the University Avenue overpass shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. He hit the front end of a southbound SUV occupied by a couple and their child before landing on the freeway, San Diego police public affairs Lt. Kevin Mayer said.

At least one other vehicle then ran over the man, who died at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.

"All indications" were that the fatality was a suicide, the lieutenant said.

No other injuries were reported.

Authorities closed the southbound side of the freeway in the area along with its onramp from Washington Street to allow access for investigators and emergency vehicles. The closures led to extra-heavy Christmas Eve congestion in the busy corridor between Mission Valley and downtown San Diego.

All lanes were open again by 4:30 p.m., according to the CHP.
