SAN DIEGO - A woman is dead after being struck by a driver while walking along the Interstate 5 freeway at about midnight Wednesday in the downtown San Diego area.
According to California Higway Patrol, the victim was walking across the I-5 southbound lanes, just north of State Route 163, when she was struck by a car. The victim was ejected and landed on the transition ramp from I-5 south to SR-163 north. Crews of a San Diego Fire-Rescue engine allegedly witnessed the crash.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not immediately released.
According to Officer Tommy Doerr, a CHP spokesman , a man was later arrested after calling the CHP Border Communications Center and telling officials he had hit something in the area, but was not sure what. CHP troopers went to his home at about 3:30 a.m. and arrested the man on charges of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.
Thirty-two-year-old Sandro Garcia was booked into the San Diego County Central Jail. His car, a 2011 Ford Focus, was also seized.
The connector ramp was shut down for about two hours while first responders cleared the scene.
