A stretch of state Route 67 in Lakeside has reopened early, after being closed all weekend as crews work to improve flood control in the area.

The southbound side of the highway from Mapleview Street to Riverford Road has closed since 10 p.m. Friday. It was scheduled to reopen Monday at 5 a.m. However, Caltrans announced that the road was reopened before 2 p.m. Sunday.

The highway was closed so crews could place a large box culvert underneath it, which required the excavation and removal of large boulders that are in the way of the county flood control improvement project.

Southbound on-ramps at Mapleview Street and Winter Gardens Boulevard were also closed.

During the closure, motorists traveling south on the highway from Ramona were detoured at Lakeside Avenue to Riverside Drive, then to Riverford Road, where they were allowed back onto the southbound Route 67, according to Caltrans.
