Parachutist hurt after hard landing

SAN DIEGO - A parachutist whose parachute may not have opened or opened partially was hospitalized Monday for injuries sustained in a hard landing near the Otay Lakes gliderport.

According to Cal Fire officials, the incident was reported at about 4 p.m. Dispatchers initially reported the person's parachute did not open.

The parachutist was found unconscious by arriving Cal Fire personnel, who were being assisted by Chula Vista firefighters, said Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser.

Bortisser said that although an air ambulance was dispatched, authorities decided to take the parachutist to a hospital by ambulance instead.

The parachutist's condition remains unknown.
