Panga boat found at Mission Beach

SAN DIEGO - Authorities are investigating the discovery of a panga boat early Monday morning off Mission Beach.

The boat was found by a beach cleanup crew at the foot of Ventura Place sometime before 6:40 a.m., according to authorities. The crew told authorities the boat appeared to have about 20 illegal immigrants on it.

When the boat washed ashore, the passengers scattered, leaving behind 17 life vests in the boat. Authorities searched the area on the ground as a helicopter scoured by air.

One nearby homeowner off Ventura Place described the scene that he captured on surveillance video.

"Everybody was about chest high soaking wet -- calmly walking down the alley wearing dark hoodies and dark pants," Bill Wuu told 10News.

Border Patrol officials confirmed that seven people were apprehended.

"It looked like they were families, you know, trying to have a better life here in the United States," Wuu said.
