Palomar Health laying off 84 workers

Layoffs effective July 26

ESCONDIDO, Calif. - Palomar Health, which operates three North County hospitals, has issued layoff notices to 84 employees, effective July 26, the company confirmed Friday.

The company issued a statement blaming the reduction, which equals 2 percent of its workforce, on federal budget cuts brought on by sequestration, lower state spending and health care reform requirements.

Palomar Health said the lower staffing level will provide more efficient operations at the new Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.

Palomar Health also runs Pomerado Hospital in Poway and still uses the old Palomar Medical Center campus in downtown Escondido.

Laid-off employees have been offered severance packages, can possibly be recalled, and can apply for other positions within the company, according to the statement. The company said it is making spending cuts to non-personnel areas, too.

According to KPBS, Palomar's contract with the California Nurses Association expired last week, and negotiations are scheduled this month.
