One dead, 1 wounded in Chula Vista shooting

CHULA VISTA - One man is dead and a second was wounded following a shooting in Chula Vista late Sunday night.

The shooting occurred at 11:45 p.m. at the intersection of Zenith Street and 3rd Avenue. According to Chula Vista police, a 19-year-old man died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest. A 20-year-old man suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his foot. A third 22-year-old man who was with them was not hurt.

The deceased victim's mother identified him to 10News as Jesus Ponce. She said the other two men were Ponce's cousin and neighbor. She said the shooting occurred after the three left Ponce's grandmother's house in the 300 block of Zenith Street to get snacks at a nearby ampm convenience store.

The victims told officers that when they reached the southwest corner of Zenith and 3rd, a lone gunman standing on the northwest corner of the intersection began shooting at them, firing off at least six rounds.

The two survivors said they dragged Ponce one block south, to the ampm at 3rd Avenue and Main Street, where they tried to get help from a family in a car. They then dragged him into the store, where he died.

The man who was hit in the foot was later transported to UC San Diego Medical Center.

Chula Vista Crimes of Violence Unit is investigating. No suspect description was immediately released. Police did not confirm if the shooting was believed to be gang-related.

The crime scene was expected to be closed through 6 a.m.
