Woman's DNA being studied for link to longevity

SAN DIEGO - A Chula Vista woman who was California’s oldest resident died Friday at the age of 114 years and 17 days.

Soledad Mexia was born in Mexico on Aug. 13, 1899, according to a list of supercentenarians, or those older than 110, compiled by the Gerontology Research Group. Only a Japanese woman and three American woman were listed as older than Mexia.

Mexia's DNA was submitted to the Los Angeles-based group in 2010 to try and identify a genetic link to longevity, the San Diego Union Tribune reported in 2012.

According to the Gerontology Research Group, the oldest California resident is now Opal Thompson who was born Jan. 13, 1901.
