NATIONAL CITY - San Diego police said a man is in custody after leading officers on a wild chase through several cities and five highways Thursday night.
Investigators said the pursuit began and ended in National City where it caused quite a stir among residents.
Blanca Gutierrez told 10News the scene was quite a shock in her normally quiet neighborhood.
"I heard a big old crash and it was all these police cars, with this white truck right there on the corner of my house," Gutierrez said.
Resident Cari McLeughlen said she witnessed the driver get taken into custody.
"We saw the guy, he was laying down. I thought somebody got shot because he was like laying on the ground," McLeughlen said.
According to police, the incident began just after 7 p.m., when officers noticed a white pickup truck that was being driven by someone they knew had outstanding warrants. Officers said they tried to pull him over, but he refused.
Officers in patrol vehicles, along with a police department helicopter, pursued the truck on Interstate 805, then on onto state Route 54, SR-125, SR-94 and then I-15.
Lt. Paul Rorrison of the San Diego Police Department said the driver was erratic.
"He wouldn't pull over for officers, and drove at speeds of up to 90 mph and even blacked out his lights at one point," Rorrison said.
The pursuit ended in a busy intersection at Lincoln Court and Grove Road in National City. That's when police said the man stopped his vehicle, jumped out and tried to flee the scene on foot.
Officers said they were able to apprehend him and take him into custody.
Police at the scene said they collected drugs and drug paraphernalia from the truck as evidence.
"The potential for a tragedy is great out here and luckily, at this point, he gave up and got out of the car and attempted to flee instead of driving more erratically," Rorrison said.
Police said the driver, a 44-year-old man whose identity has not been released, has outstanding warrants and now will face drug charges.
