Office Depot Foundation, actor Nick Cannon give local kids essential school supplies

SAN DIEGO - The first day of school is tough enough, so imagine not having the very basics like a pen or pencil.

In an effort to prevent that, 3,500 sackpacks were presented to local children and organizations on Friday.

The Office Depot Foundation started the program in 2001, and for the first time, actor Nick Cannon will join the back to school event.

Cannon, a San Diego native and host of "America's Got Talent," helped hand out the oversized sacks to kids at the Office Depot location on 8740 Rio San Diego Drive. The sacks were filled with essential school supplies like a pen, a pencil, a ruler and crayons.

The sacks will also go to kids through a number of organizations like YMCA of San Diego County, San Diego Unified School District and Promises2Kids.

By the end of this year, program organizers think three million kids will have benefited from the giveaway.

Organizers say in the past six years, more than 20,000 kids in the area have received school supplies to help them gear up for the school year.
