Off-duty firefighter injured after attempting to put out La Mesa garage fire

LA MESA - An off-duty firefighter was recovering Wednesday from first-degree burns he suffered while trying to put out a fire in the attached garage of a La Mesa home, according to City News Service.
The fire in the 9500 block of Gregory Street was reported at 10:37 p.m. Tuesday, said Deputy Chief Gregory McAlpine of Heartland Fire & Rescue.
Firefighters arrived in about five minutes and took another 12 minutes to extinguish the blaze, McAlpine said.
The injured man, who suffered burns to his chest while using a fire extinguisher in an attempt to put the blaze out, was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment, McAlpine said.
About 15 firefighters responded to the fire, McAlpine said.
