Oceanside woman wakes up to stranger covering her mouth

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - A woman awoke in her Oceanside home Friday to find her mouth covered by the hand of a strange man, who fled moments later when her dog went after him, police reported.

The 36-year-old victim was accosted by the prowler at her house in the 500 block of Vine Street at about 6:15 a.m., just after her husband left for work, Oceanside police Lt. Valencia Saadat said.

"I started dozing off and all of a sudden I felt the pressure of somebody's hand on my mouth," said Anna Thompson.

Police said the man pressed his hand down on Thompson's mouth so hard it split her upper lip.

Thompson's dog then confronted the strange man, prompting him to flee.

"It's the scariest thing you'll ever go through in your life … is to wake up and have somebody's hand over your mouth," Thompson told 10News. "I fought for my life and my dog chased him out of the house, and luckily, I have a mean little dog."

Thompson's Rottweiler-Siberian husky mix named Ziggy chased the man out of the house and down the street.

"I fought, and the second I got a scream out, my dog started to attack him and he ran …," Thompson said.

Thompson and her husband believe the man was waiting outside of the house before 6 a.m., looking for an opportunity to get inside.

When Thompson's husband left, the stranger went through the unlocked front door and headed straight for Thompson's bedroom.

Some neighbors saw the man run down the street.

"All of a sudden, I heard this screaming, and at that time I saw this gentleman running down the street wearing all black and my neighbor was hysterical, saying, 'This guy was in my bedroom,'" a neighbor told 10News.

While no one got a really good look at the prowler, police towed away a suspicious car in front of Thompson's house. Additionally, police said the man left behind shoes in the garage and a hat on Thompson's bedside table.

Thompson said she doesn't know how she'll sleep at night.

"I don't want to stay here. I don't feel safe," she said.

The intruder was described as a clean-shaven, short-haired man, possibly in his 30s.
