New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is defending his tip left at a restaurant in Del Mar.
The NFL superstar, who recently signed a $100 million contract, left a $3 tip on a $74 takeout bill at the Del Mar Rendezvous Chinese fusion restaurant.
A photo of the receipt was leaked and posted to the website TheDirty.com, where many questioned if it was an appropriate amount.
On Wednesday, Brees responded on Twitter to tell followers he would have tipped at least 20 percent if he would have dined in the restaurant.
Since the incident, Daniel Shalom Schreiber, managing partner of the Del Mar Rendezvous restaurant, issued a full apology, calling Brees and important member of the community.
"I am not at liberty to divulge the identity of our guests or to confirm the authenticity of this receipt or whether it is a digital creation and fraud," Schreiber wrote in a statement. "What I can say is that we believe Drew Brees to be a great guy and pillar of the community in New Orleans as he was and still is in San Diego through his immense charitable giving and wonderful leadership."
The restaurant has participated in his Brees Dream Golf Tournament, donating hundreds of dollars in food and staff to the event.
To complete the apology, Schreiber made a donation to Drew Brees' foundation for $888.88, a lucky number in the Chinese culture.
