LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Patients who took part in a clinical trial for a new Type-2 diabetes drug at Scripps in La Jolla showed promising results in several areas.

Doctor Athena Tsimikas from the Whittier Diabetes Institute is one of the doctors invovled in clinical trials of a drug called semaglutide.

Simply put, it helps patients control their blood sugar levels, but only has to be taken once a week.
It's also been shown to help people lose weight in the process.

Semaglutide is taken by injection but there's also a pill form of the drug that's also  in clinical trial.

The injectable could be available in as soon as a few months but still has to obtain final approval by the FDA.
