SAN DIEGO - A new phone app and website, scheduled to launch in February, will hopefully ease parking pains in Hillcrest.
ParkHillcrest.com is an effort by the Uptown Parking District. The app would allow you to type in a Hillcrest destination and immediately, it would show you available parking lots, meters, and even restaurant validations.
“It would be really useful,” said tourist Ximena Gallegos. “Especially for us [who] don’t’ live here.”
The app will not be able to tell you if a lot is full or not, but Michael Wright says anything helps.
“It’s a good start, finally, after all of these years,” said Wright, who manages the City Delicatessen in Hillcrest.
Wright insists there is enough available parking and insists the problem is finding it. He says ParkHillcrest.com is a step in the right direction, but it’s not enough.
“Basically I think they’re missing the point. We need flashing signs, we need park here, we need to go to the restaurants who are willing to pay for their customers to park,” Wright said.
In addition to the app, there are also plans to launch a shuttle service that would take people from one side of Hillcrest to the other. That is also scheduled to launch in February.
