NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - A driver who struck and broke a natural gas meter with his truck overnight caused an entire neighborhood to awaken from their slumber in National City.
The National City Police Department said the gas leak occurred at about 12:30 a.m. in the driveway of a home in the 300 block of South Kenton Avenue.
The driver told 10News crews at the scene that he was attempting to park the white Ford F-150 when he hit the meter.
The two residents inside the house heard loud hissing, ran out of the home and called 911.
When police arrived and smelled the gas, they began evacuating adjacent homes.
San Diego Gas & Electric crews arrived about 30 minutes into the incident and shut down the gas line.
Some of the evacuated residents said they want SDG&E to relocate the meter, because it is located in a bad spot.
No one was injured.
