Name released of 12-year-old boy who died at Fiesta Island

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office released the name of the 12-year-old boy who died at Fiesta Island Monday.

No cause of death was listed for William Shook on the Medical Examiner's Office website Tuesday.

Police and paramedics were called to the Fiesta Island Youth Camp near East Mission Bay Drive shortly after 7:30 a.m. Monday on a report the boy had shot himself, according to San Diego police and fire officials. The Boy Scouts of America hosts a summer camp there.

Officers found the 12-year-old boy inside a tent. He had a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Paramedics were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was found nearby.

Police said the boy's autopsy was completed Tuesday and the manner of death is pending.

The handgun found at the scene is unregistered. "It is believed the gun’s origin will be traced back to Las Vegas, Nevada and was brought to San Diego by the decedent," police said in a news release issued Tuesday.

Police are continuing to conduct the follow-up investigation in the case.

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to call the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
