Multiple bicyclists hit by suspected drunk driver on Fiesta Island

SAN DIEGO - Eight bicyclists were injured after a wrong-way driver careened into them on Fiesta Island Tuesday night.

The incident occurred just before 6:30 p.m. on Fiesta Island Road, according to San Diego police.

Police said a group of about 20 bicyclists were riding in a group when a Geo Prism driven by 49-year-old Theresa Owens struck them head-on.

One of the riders suffered broken ribs, a major vertebrae fracture and internal injuries. The other seven suffered minor injuries.

Owens was also briefly hospitalized. After being released from the hospital Wednesday, she was booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee on one count each of driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of a controlled substance, both felonies. She also faces one count of being under the influence of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Her bail was set at $100,000.

The incident is still under investigation.
