CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A Chula Vista mother is facing serious charges after police say she left her 9-month-old baby and 4-year-old child in the car while she went shopping at Target.
Parking lot surveillance video shows the 30-year-old mother pulling into a parking space at 4:33 p.m. last Saturday. Police said Glenda Palafox walked into the store but left both children alone in the car.
Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge told 10News, "The engine was on, windows were up, three of the doors were locked, the driver's door was unlocked."
The former Army sergeant left the air conditioning on but police said heat was not the main concern.
"At 4 years old, children are mobile, clearly mobile enough to move around," said Wedge. "But also of concern is somebody else in the parking lot having access to the kids."
Two people are seen in the video walking by the car and noticing the kids all alone. They told a Target employee, who called 911.
Police arrived and checked on the children. Four minutes later, the mother is seen on video running to her car. For 11 minutes, the children were alone in a car with the ignition on.
The officer cited Palafox for child endangerment and let her go. 10News wanted to get her side of the story and found her husband.
When asked about what happened, if it was a mistake and if she regretted what happened, her husband replied, "Don't want to talk about it ma'am. I mean, obviously it was a mistake."
10News reporter Itica Milanes noticed Palafox crouching in the back seat of the car and asked her if she wanted to share how she felt about what happened.
Her husband answered for her saying, "She feels remorseful, ma'am. It's embarrassing."
10News found a couple of tweets between the couple the same day she left the children in the car.
The husband wrote, "Feeling blue." Palafox responded, "I'm sorry babes."
Palafox is charged with a misdemeanor. The case has been turned over to the District Attorney's Office.
