Mom of fallen soldier will not be deported

SAN DIEGO - The Mexican mother of an Army nurse killed in Afghanistan will not be deported.

Danielle Roche, an attorney for Maria Cordova, told 10News that Cordova's request to remain in the U.S. was granted. She will have to apply for a renewal in one year.

Cordova's daughter, 25-year-old Capt. Jenny Moreno, was killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom. Moreno and three other soldiers were killed Oct. 6, 2013, in a roadside bombing.

Moreno, a San Diego High School graduate, was awarded the Bronze Star and is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Cordova was on the verge of deportation back to Mexico after serving time for a cocaine conviction. However, her request for a stay in the U.S. was granted, and she told authorities she wanted to stay in the country to honor her daughter.

Cordova has a son who is currently in the Army.
