Mistaken gun causes scare at Otay Mesa movie theater

A man who was carrying a knife that was mistaken for a gun caused a brief interruption at an Otay Mesa movie theater late Wednesday night.

At about midnight, San Diego police responded to a 911 call from the AMC Palm Promenade at 770 Dennery Rd., after a security guard spotted what he thought was a gun in a moviegoer’s pocket.

Officers entered the theater and found the man, who was in fact carrying a knife. He was arrested on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon, a police watch commander said. His name was not released.

Witnesses told 10News the theater was placed on lockdown while officers investigated the incident. The screening the suspect was watching was also stopped.

AMC rules prohibit weapons of any kind, real or toys, from being brought in.
