Water service back at Mission Bay resort after water main break

SAN DIEGO - A Mission Bay resort was without water for more than nine hours after a water main break Wednesday evening.

The break occurred before 7:30 p.m. on East Mission Bay Drive near Fiesta Island, according to Arian Collins, spokesman for the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department.

An old 16-inch cast iron pipe that is enclosed in a concrete casing and runs under the Interstate 5 freeway burst.

The Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa was without water until 5 a.m., when a second water feed was channeled in, Collins confirmed.

“We have an emergency plan already in place for it, so we already have water, we have water bottles, so we're just activating our emergency plan at this point, just making sure everybody has water in their guest rooms, (and) that we can at least continue to function,” Don Dennis, general manager for the Hilton told 10News overnight.

Meanwhile, San Diego Public Utilities Department crews were frantically working to repair the broken water main. On Thursday morning, the city and Caltrans were trying to determine how best to proceed with the repairs.
