SAN DIEGO - Medal of Honor recipient Army Staff Sgt. Ty Carter threw the ceremonial first pitch before the San Diego Padres game against the San Francisco Giants on Monday.
Carter was recognized during a pre-game ceremony at Petco Park and received a standing ovation as he took the mound.
After throwing the pitch, Carter thanked the people of San Diego.
"My military roots actually started in '98 in MCRD San Diego," he said. "I really appreciate all the help that the ballpark and that this city has done for the military and I hope that you continue to do so … I really appreciate it, thank you."
Last week, Carter was awarded the nation's highest military award by President Obama during a ceremony at the White House.
Carter risked his life to save an injured soldier, resupply ammunition to his comrades and render first aid during intense fighting in a remote mountain outpost in Afghanistan four years ago.
