SAN DIEGO - The commanding general of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing removed the head of Miramar-based Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 11 Friday due to a loss of trust and confidence in his leadership ability, the Marine Corps announced.
The decision by Maj. Gen. Mark Wise to relieve Lt. Col. Michael Hernandez of his duties as commander of the squadron was "solely a performance-based decision," according to Capt. Kurt Stahl, director of public affairs for the 3rd MAW.
"There was no misconduct or anything that would require an investigation," Stahl said. "As Marines, we set a very high standard for performance for ourselves and our units, and we hold ourselves accountable to that standard of performance."
Stahl declined to elaborate.
Hernandez, a 26-year member of the USMC, was selected to command MALS-11 in August 2014.
His personal decorations include a Joint Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star in lieu of 2nd Award, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
Maj. David Donnell, executive officer of the squadron, will take charge pending the selection of a new commander, Stahl said.
