Former Blue Angels commander relieved of duty

SAN DIEGO - The executive officer of Naval Base Coronado was relieved of his duties after an investigation into alleged misconduct while he led the Blue Angels flight demonstration team, the Navy announced Friday.

Capt. Gregory McWherter was removed by Vice Adm. William French, head of the Navy Installations Command.

The Navy said the decision was based on initial findings of an ongoing investigation into allegations of misconduct and an inappropriate command climate for the Blue Angels at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida.

McWherter served as the Blue Angels' commanding officer from November 2008 to November 2010, and again from May 2011 to November 2012. The Navy said the allegations arose from those specific time periods.

He became the executive officer at Naval Base Coronado in November. The Navy said McWherter has been temporarily reassigned to Naval Air Forces in San Diego.
