SAN DIEGO - A key route from the Midway area into Mission Bay Park was closed by a broken water main on Saturday.

Water gushed out onto the streets.

Arian Collins with the San Diego Water Department says the break was reported about 5:15 a.m.

Collins says crews are working to repair a broken 16-inch cast iron water main that broke under Sports Arena Boulevard beneath the Interstate 8 overpass.

A driver tried to drive through the water, and ended up getting stuck. A tow truck had to rescue him.

Northbound Sports Arena Boulevard was blocked at Interstate 8, and the right turn to the eastbound freeway was closed as well.

Traffic heading to the beach communities was able to use the Interstate 8 offramp to the bridge over the San Diego River to reach West Mission Bay Drive and Ingraham Street.

Southbound Sports Arena Boulevard and its ramp to eastbound Interstate 8 were not affected.

No area businesses or homes were flooded, but debris did come up from under the street.

Collins says no one lost service because of the water main break. He says a couple lanes on Sports Arena Boulevard will remain closed for most of Saturday.
