Memorial service held for Chula Vista shooting victim Jamel McGuire

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. - Hundreds of people attended a memorial service in Spring Valley on Monday for Jamel McGuire, who was shot and killed in a Chula Vista apartment nearly two weeks ago.

McGuire, 27, was an aspiring basketball player and musician. Police said he was with two friends when someone walked in and shot him to death. A five-year-old child was asleep in the apartment at the time of the shooting but was not hurt.

McGuire, affectionately known as "Mel Mel," was hoping to follow in the footsteps of his brother, Utah Jazz basketball player Dominic McGuire.

"He's always going to be with me," said Dominic McGuire. "I'll make sure I put out all his music. I'm going to tell his story, make sure I keep it going for Mel Mel."

David Kinder was one of Jamel McGuire’s best friends.

He choked up during the memorial saying, "So hard right now man. All I think about is me, Jamel, basketball and music. That's what me and him loved the most."

On June 12, police officers dispatched around 12:20 a.m. to investigate reports of gunfire at 520 E. H St. in the gated Beacon Cove Apartments found two people who told them a friend had been shot a short time earlier, said Chula Vista police Lt. Fritz Reber. The victim was found dead inside apartment 41, he said.

Witnesses told investigators that at least one suspect entered the apartment and fatally shot the victim.

On Monday, police told 10News that based on how the crime went down, they believe Jamel McGuire was targeted. At Monday's memorial service, Pastor Tony Jefferson spoke out about getting revenge.

"And we rebuke the spirit of retaliation right now in the name of Jesus," he said.

10News saw several detectives at the memorial service. They said they were there in case anyone had information about the murder they wanted to share.

McGuire's mother was emotional during the service.

"This was a safe place," she said. "I moved out here. This was a safe place. I never thought I would have to deal with this."

No suspect description was immediately available and no arrests have been made in connection with McGuire's death.

Relatives and friends at the memorial service said it was a celebration of his life. McGuire leaves behind three young children.
