The public, veterans and active-duty military and their families were invited to the cemetery, which opened in 2010. Sunday's event at the Miramar National Cemetery began at 1 p.m.

Retired Brig. Gen. Robert Cardenas, a veteran of World War II and Vietnam and a respected test pilot, spoke at Sunday's service. Cardenas piloted the airplane that launched Chuck Yeager's rocket plane on its supersonic flight.

The Navy Band Southwest, the Young Marines Color Guard and a bagpiper also performed at the event.

The annual service at Fort Rosecrans will take place on Monday.
