The inaugural Memorial Day service at the Miramar National Cemetery was held Sunday.

The public, veterans and active-duty military and their families were invited to the cemetery, which opened in 2010. Sunday's event at the Miramar National Cemetery began at 1 p.m.Retired Brig. Gen. Robert Cardenas, a veteran of World War II and Vietnam and a respected test pilot, spoke at Sunday's service. Cardenas piloted the airplane that launched Chuck Yeager's rocket plane on its supersonic flight.The Navy Band Southwest, the Young Marines Color Guard and a bagpiper also performed at the event.The annual service at Fort Rosecrans will take place on Monday.Copyright Do you have more information about this story?
