Masked man robs La Mesa restaurant at knifepoint

LA MESA - A man wearing a ski mask and brandishing a knife fought with a La Mesa restaurant employee during a robbery early Friday morning.

The robbery occurred at about 1:20 a.m. the Riviera Supper Club at 7777 University Ave. According to La Mesa police, the suspect approached the employee from behind as he was closing out the register for the night. He showed a knife and demanded cash, police said.

A physical altercation ensued. The employee told police he was pushed to the ground and the suspect took cash from the register and fled out a back door.

A San Diego police helicopter assisted with an unsuccessful search of the neighborhood. The employee sustained a minor hand laceration that did not require medical treatment.

No surveillance photos were released. The suspect was described as white, 6 feet tall with a muscular build. He was wearing all black clothing that included a black jacket, black pants, black shoes and a black ski mask.
