SAN DIEGO - A suspected drunken driver was arrested in Normal Heights on Saturday thanks to help from a group of Marines.

The incident occurred on Interstate 805 near the ramp to Interstate 8 just after 2 a.m. Witnesses said a black SUV was swerving before it rear-ended a white car, causing the car to spin out of control.

The driver of the SUV then got out of the vehicle and started running on the freeway. A group of Marines who witnessed the crash pulled over to help.

Some of the Marines chased after the man while others directed traffic, trying to keep other drivers safe.

"Me and my other friend were in pursuit of the guy that took off running who was drunk and the other ones were trying to slow everybody down and thank God nobody ended up getting hit and there were no other cars involved," said Jaime, a Marine who witnessed the crash.

Eventually, they caught the man and held him until police arrived. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI, police said.

No injuries were reported.
