Hundreds of military wives and girlfriends lined up at MCAS Miramar on Sunday to get new ball gowns and wedding dresses.
Leianna Seals thought she was just one of the hundreds there to get a new gown, but things started to change.
First, she was called out of the long line and received her dress first. Seals chose a red gown and received some special makeup, but she still thought she was just the lucky winner who got to choose her dress first.
The ruse continued when she met up with her boyfriend, Marine Lance Cpl. William Bell, at the event. When the two went outdoors for pictures, the ruse came to an end when Bell asked Seals to marry him. After Seals regained her composure, she said yes.
It also turned out that Seals was not the winner of a contest, but Bell was. The contest was among Marines to share their love story. Bell wrote a moving essay about how he and Seals met in high school in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city.
Bell's essay was enough for the win, which included more than just a ball gown. Seals will also get to select a wedding dress. Plus, Bell received a $2,000 gift certificate to Robbins Brothers jewelers to select a ring.
"I don't know
I'm just speechless," said Seals. "I don't know what to say."
The couple will now make wedding plans.
